Ebola Virus Disease Patient Under Investigation (PUI): What if your patient needs a surgical intervention?
Numerous ethical and clinical considerations must be weighed in order to make a sound decision whether to proceed with an emergent surgical intervention for patients with suspected or confirmed Ebola. The surgical protocol for possible or confirmed Ebola cases provided by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) offers guidance to avoid elective surgical procedures on such patients. Perioperative leaders need to proactively prepare for patients under investigation (PUI) who may need an emergent surgical procedure. The webinar leaders will discuss the process steps involved as well as how to ensure that proper risk mitigation is defined in all aspects of evaluating and caring for a PUI for Ebola virus disease. Proactive planning is necessary to make sure that all individuals involved in the care of a patient under investigation for Ebola virus disease have the appropriate guidelines and tools to provide safe care.
After completion of this continuing nursing education activity, participants will be able to:
- Discuss the ACS Surgical Protocol for Possible or Confirmed Ebola Cases using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention case definition.
- Discuss the transmission of Ebola virus disease by recognizing the signs and symptoms.
- Review the initial screening, workflow, and process steps in the care of a PUI for Ebola virus disease.
- Identify proactive preparation required, perioperative care strategies, and barrier requirements needed for the intraoperative team in the emergent surgical intervention for the PUI for Ebola virus disease.
- Define the postprocedure considerations for decontamination processes after the care of a PUI who requires a surgical intervention.
