Details

Ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) show very low rates for complications including patient falls, burns, wrong-surgery events, and patient transfers to hospitals, according to the ASC Quality Collaboration, which tracks results quarterly for about 1,300 ASCs. ASCs are participating in Medicare's quality reporting program, a new way to validate the safe care they provide. Still, ASCs remain vigilant and continually seek ways to improve on their delivery of safe care.

This special report centers on five patient safety topics of particular interest to nurse managers and other leaders in ASCs, which includes wrong surgery, obese patients, sleep apnea, pediatric patients, and toxic anterior segment syndrome (TASS). Each article provides practical advice to help leaders reinforce the processes they apply daily to protect their patients.

Table of Contents:

  • Joint Commission tools to prevent wrong surgery
  • ASCs can jump on surgical checklist bandwagon
  • Providing safe care for obese patients in the ASC
  • Caring for children? Consider their unique needs
  • Sleep apnea: Identifying patients at risk in the ASC
  • Tracking TASS: Registry eyes an elusive target
